Critique for South of England Basset Hound Club – 31st May 2024, Judge Mrs Caz Turner (Devonhound)

 

My thanks to the very hard working Officers and Committee of South of England Basset Hound Club for their very kind invitation to judge their 60th Anniversary Open show held in conjunction with Southern Counties and for their excellent hospitality and beautiful gifts of which I will treasure….thanks also to my very capable stewards who kept my ring flowing, and finally to all the exhibitors for giving me the opportunity to go over their lovely hounds, and accepting my decisions so sportingly.

Veteran Dog or Bitch (3 – 1a)

  1. Pearsons Ch ROAMANBAY RUSSIA WITH LOVE TO ARMARIO JW – Red and white bitch of 10 years. Lovely head and expression, good shoulder placement and ribcage, nice knuckled feet, good rear angulation and kept her level topline on the move.  BVIS

  2. Melbourne & Murrays DIHEATH WRECKLESS ERIC – Black blanket male of 8 years preferred length of neck on 1, level topline but would prefer more bend of stifle. Moved well. RBVIS

SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG OR BITCH(5)

  1. Gambling’s DIZANDRA CARPE NOCTEM - Tri colour male of 14mths, lots to like, lovely head with pleasing muzzle, leathers of correct length, nice knuckled feet and good shoulder placement and forechest.   Level topline, held on the move, super bend of stifle, moved well, will watch his progress with interest.

  2. Unett’s HARVIDENE CUCKOO IN THE NEST – Tri coloured bitch of 6 mths, finer in bone than 1, feminine head with good length of leathers, shoulder placement good, topline rising, good tail set, moved out well.

  3. Coopers HOUNDSBAY VITO ANDOLINI

BABY PUPPY DOG OR BITCH (3)

  1. Archers ROAMANBAY REDDY TO ROCK – Red and white bitch of just 5 mths. Pretty head and pleasing muzzle, good length of leathers, with  good length of neck into super shoulder placement, good ribcage and length of body, topline rising slightly, her first time in the ring and on the ramp, lots to like about this one.

  2. Jones’s CLANWILLOW FIRE AND ICE – Black blanket boy of just 41/2 months. Lovely masculine head, good length of leathers, nice length of neck, front assembly is good with a good length of body and a level topline, good bend of stifle. Movement was a little erratic but he is just a baby enjoying himself.

  3. Jones’s CLANWILLOW ICE QUEEN

MINOR PUPPY DOG (3- 1a)

  1. Parkes BESSALIN RED HOT CHILLIE – Red blanket handsome boy of 8 months, masculine head, good length of leathers, would prefer better shoulder placement and more forechest, good ribcage carried well back with level topline and good bend of stifle, moved out well.

  2. Parkes SASILASY RAISE YOUR GLASS TO MOONSKY - Red and white boy of just 6 months. Sweet expression, good length of leathers and good depth of forechest. Ribcage good and decent rear angulation, with correct tailset, a little more practice needed on the move but just a baby so plenty of time to settle.

  3. PUPPY DOG (2)

  1. Melbourne & Murrays DIHEATH CHEKOV – Red and white boy of 10 months, very smart, liked his head and expression, correct length of leathers and good length of neck leading to good lay of shoulder, with plenty of forechest. Good knuckled feet and level topline which he held on the move, good rear angulation, please to award him BPD & BPIS.

  2. Parkes – SASILASY RAISE YOUR GLASS TO MOONSKY – as Minor Puppy Dog

  1. Gamblings DIZANDRA CARPE NOCTEM -  as Special Beginner

NOVICE DOG (3)

  1. Coopers HOUNDSBAY VITO ANDOLINI – Tri coloured quite heavy-set male, large head, and depth of muzzle, nice dark eye, with good length of leathers, Shoulder placement ok and good ribcage, topline needs to settle when stacked and on the move. Moved out well.

  2. Bates DIHEATH JAR JAR BINKS AT KARAMES – Tri coloured boy with a nice expression, eyes good and correct length of leathers, long neck, would prefer more forechest and is sightly wide at front. Good level topline which he held on the move.

  3. Buftons KENZDUO SHORE AT ROYALINNE

POST GRADUATE DOG (3)

  1. Woodworths ARMARDIO AGAINST THE WIND JW – Red and white male, good head shape and with deep muzzle and correct length of leathers, long neck into good shoulder placement and good forechest, well knuckled feet and nice ribcage, level topline and good rear angulation. Moved well. BD/BOS

  2. Bates – DIHEATH PYJAMA AT KARAMES – Nice head and expression, quite heavy in build, a little wide at front, good ribcage and level topline, which he held on the move.

  3. Coopers HOUNDSBAY VITO ANDOLINI

LIMIT DOG ( 5- 2a)

  1. Strudwicks ARMARDIO RIDE LIKE THE WIND AMONG KUMAMATATA JW – Red blanket boy with nice head, eyes and leathers, good length of neck into good shoulder placement, would prefer a little more forechest, good ribcage and tailset and level topline. Good rear angulation and he moved well, of heavier build that 2nd. RBD

  2. Melbourne & Murrays  DIHEATH MACARAMADC – Red blanket with nice head and good depth of muzzle, good length of neck, good shoulder placement, would like a little more forechest, level topline and good tailset, good rear angulation, good reach and drive which he showed on the move.

  3. Grimshaws MALRICH HEY JUDE

OPEN DOG (2 – 1a)

  1. Grays QUANTAS-NAPOCA OLAF (IMP ROM) – Broken tri boy with nice head and leathers, good strong neck with good shoulder placement and decent forechest, nice ribcage and level topline and good bend of stifle.  Moved really well and with drive.

  1. Unetts HARVIDENE CUCKOO IN THE NEST – as 2nd in Spec Beg

PUPPY BITCH (6 – 1a)

  1. Parkes BESSALIN AINT MISS BEHAVING – Black blanket of 11mths, lovely feminine head and good length of leathers, nice length of neck into deep forechest, good shoulder placement and good ribcage, topline had a slight rise, correct tailset and rear angulation was ok, moved well once she settled. RBP

  2. Melbourne & Murrays DIHEATH MARTA – Red and white bitch of 10mths, finer in bone than 1, very pretty head with correct length of leathers, good reach of neck into good shoulder placement, topline needs to settle but is young and still developing, correct tail set and rear angulation was ok.  Covered the ground well on the move.

  3. Woodworths WOODRICH SUMMER BREEZE

JUNIOR BITCH (1)

  1. Buftons PRETTY ROSE AT ROYALINNE – dark tri of 10months., pretty head and good length of leathers, neck ok, would of liked more length of body and more rear angulation, topline was rising, she was a bit of a fidget today but a happy girl on the move.

NOVICE BITCH (1)

  1. Jones’s CLANWILLOW GOLDEN SUNSET – Red and white bitch with feminine head, long leathers and good reach of neck, good shoulders and forechest, good ribcage but topline was rising, would like more angulation on the rear, correct tailset. A little unsettled today which made it difficult to assess her movement. 

  2. POST GRADUATE BITCH (4 – 1a)

  1. Pearsons ARMARDIO CANDLE IN THE WIND JW – Red blanket of 20mths, so much to like, presented in super condition, pretty feminine head, dark eye and lovely expression, nice length of neck and good shoulders and ample forechest, good knuckled feet and lovely ribcage and length of loin, good rear angulation, lovely to look at on the stack, level topline held on the move, moved beautifully around the ring with drive and enthusiasm. No hesitation in awarding her BB and BIS.

  2. McLeans SWITHERLAND GABRIELLA AT STOOKEWOOD – Red blanket 3 year old, heavier build than 1, beautiful head and expression, correct length of leathers, good length of neck with good front assembly, nice knuckled feet and good rib cage , topline needs to strengthen, would prefer a little more rear angulation, Moved ok but not quite the hind action of the winner.

  3. Archers ROAMANBAY RED HOT PEPA SAUCE

LIMIT BITCH (5)

  1. Pearsons ARMARDIO WIND OF CHANGE JW – Red blanket of 20mths, lovely head and expression and correct length of leathers. Heavier set but with good shoulders and front, good ribcage and length of body, level topline and correct tailset. Moved effortlessly around the ring. RBIS

  2. Jones’s CLANWILLOW CENTENARY DREAM – Red and white of finer bone than 1. Lovely head and expression, good length of neck and front assembly, correct knuckled feet and good length of body and correct tailset, rear angulation ok. Moved well.

  3. Melbourne & Murrays DIHEATH ELVIS

OPEN BITCH (2)

  1. Archers ROAMANBAY REBELLIOUS FLAME – Red and white 3 year old with lovely head and expression, good length of neck and good shoulders and forechest, really like the front assembly, knuckled feet, topline a little soft and would like more rear angulation, correct tailset. Moved well.

  2. Melbourne & Murrays DIHEATH RTWO JUTWO – Red and while 3 year old, liked her head and expression, longer in leg than 1, good forechest and level topline, would prefer better rear angulation, moved out really well.
